Help celebrate the Hawaiian culture and cheer on public and private school students as they compete in the Hawai'i Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 at Kapolei Middle School.

Intermediate and high school groups will compete in three divisions: kane (male), wahine (female) and hui'ia (combined). The competition, an annual event since 1978, has been sponsored by the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society Inc. since 1986.

Jan Itagaki, director of Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society Inc., said students gain "an opportunity to learn about the culture" and share what they learn with the community.

About 20 schools are expected to compete this year. Admission is $6 per person; children 5 and under are free. Organizers ask the public to not bring coolers, beach chairs or large umbrellas to the event. Call 521-6905 for more information.
