Maui beats Baldwin for No. 1: Defense made the difference last night as Maui High defeated Baldwin 5-2 yesterday to earn the No. 1 seed in the Maui Interscholastic League's championship baseball tournament starting Thursday.
Both teams came into the game with 6-0 records, but neither had played in more than a month because of the teachers' strike.
While Maui's infield was turning four double plays in the first four innings, Baldwin was making three errors to help Maui establish a 5-0 lead in the game at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.
Baldwin made two errors in the first inning and Maui's Grant Nakama singled home a run. After an error, a walk and a single in the third, winning pitcher Alan Castro singled home two runs to make it 5-0.
