Multi-colored nail polishes reflect new fad in cosmetics

Never found that perfect nail polish color to match every outfit?

Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna shows off her painted nails. Several new types of reflective nail polish appear to change colors with a simple tilt of the hand.

Several lines of polish have found a solution to the dilemma: Reflective nail polish that changes colors with just a slight tilt of the hand.

"People are dying to get it on," said Barbara Brown, cosmetician at Steven Michael's Salon in Kaimuki. "It goes with everything you're wearing."

Each shade of reflective polish has several colors mixed in. And when you tilt your hand in the light, your nail color changes. Simple. Some, such as Afterglow by Mood Mania in "Afternoon Delight" (shown below), radiate seven different colors with each tilt; others, such as Afterglow's "Rapture" and "Big Bang," have four.

And if that's not enough to convince you to make a manicure appointment, there are more polish trends that may.

• Holographic polish and glitter, introduced during Y2K, has outlived its trendiness to become a staple with manicurists. Northern Lights, EZ Flow, Creative Nails, Nicole and Toma lines each carry its own brand of holographic polishes and glitters that give your nails an eerie 3-D effect.

• And mood-changing polish has retained its popularity, with cheaper brands hitting shelves in drug stores, such as Longs Drugs. Body-heat activated, the color changes depending on the temperature.

And hey, why not experiment? "It's just nail polish," Brown said. "You can always remove it."
