Fire rescue crews retrieved a body of a man who was found floating in Nuuanu Stream in downtown today.

Firefighters responded to the scene on River Street, just above Pauahi Street, at 5:48 a.m. and found the body floating face down in about 2 1/2 to 3 feet of water. The body was found about 100 yards downstream of the Kukui Street bridge.

Firefighters said the man had a gash on top of his head and they described him as in his 40s or 50s.

Police closed off River Street between Pauahi and Beretania streets for about two hours during the body recovery.
