Harris, City Council disclose gifts received in past year

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris yesterday reported receiving $3,621 worth of travel-related gifts, along with free memberships at various private clubs on O'ahu.

Harris received free airfare and accommodations to: a meeting of the international council for Local Environmental Initiatives in New Zealand in March, valued at $1,400; a meeting of the United Nations European and North American Roundtable on Sustainable Development summit in June in Colorado, valued at $675; and an "e-government" conference in Philadelphia sponsored by Governing Magazine, valued at $1,546.

Honorary membership in the clubs ranged from a high value of $327 a month for Waialae Country Club to a low of $60 a month for Waikiki Yacht Club.

Yesterday was the deadline for the city's elected and appointed officials to file disclosures of gifts they received valued at $200 or more — including any combination of gifts from one individual that reached that value. The disclosures cover gifts received from July 1, 2000 to June 30.

Harris reported receiving annual passes to Consolidated Amusement's theaters and parking passes from APCOA for him and his wife. Harris estimated the value of the theater passes at $175 and parking passes at $100.

The City Clerk's Office said Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura and Council members Romy Cachola, John Henry Felix, Rene Mansho, Gary Okino filed reports; Duke Bainum, John DeSoto and Steve Holmes filed "no gift" forms. Andy Mirikitani did not file a form.

Mansho reported receiving $2,500 worth of gifts of airfare, hotel and meals, $1,850 of it from the U.S. Maritime Transportation System National Advisory Council for meetings in Washington, D.C., Charleston, S.C., and Kings Point, N.Y.

Yoshimura, Cachola, Okino and Felix said they received Waialae Country Club memberships but listed no value. Felix and Okino listed APCOA parking passes; Felix and Yoshimura reported a VIP card for Sea Life Park, Waimea Falls Park and Atlantis Submarines.
