Last October, DeJesus, 56, was selected the department's Employee of the Year for his performance in the Fire Safety and Education Section.
Frank DeJesus Jr. implemented a keiki safety card program.
"I'll miss my fellow workers because we worked together many years," DeJesus said. "I'll miss the department. My heart is with the department."
DeJesus' fire safety lessons benefited hundreds of community groups, homeowners, senior citizens, schools and businesses.
"You can't replace him," said Capt. Jason Takara, who worked with DeJesus. "You can assign a person to his spot, but you can't replace him."
Fire Chief Attilio Leonardi said DeJesus was instrumental in implementing the award-winning Keiki Photo Safety Card Program, which incorporates an individual's photograph and safety slogan attached to a magnetic card.
"He has so many contacts in the community," Battalion Chief Ken Silva said. "Everyone knows him as 'Uncle Frank.' He has by far the most letters of commendation from the community. It's a testament of the kind of work he's done over the years."
