St. Louis School appoints Young volleyball coach

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Dexter Young, a successful club coach and assistant at Kamehameha the past six years, has been appointed volleyball coach at St. Louis School by principal Burton Tomita.

He replaces former University of Hawai'i standout Rick Tune, who led the Crusaders to their best season and narrowly missed qualifying for the state tournament last year. Tune left to coach the junior varsity at his alma mater Punahou.

Young, 43, a 1975 Pearl City High graduate, has been a boys varsity assistant and head intermediate boys coach at Kamehameha since 1995. He also coaches the Hawaiian Warriors club team. The Warriors 17-under team finished third in this years U.S. Volleyball Association Junior Nationals in Phoenix.

Kanamu Akana, his assistant at Kamehameha and with the club team the past three years, will join him at St. Louis.

Young starts his first varsity practice Saturday with six or seven returnees, he said, including junior Max deWolff, who was chosen a Most Valuable Player at a USA Volleyball national development camp last month.
