MAUI

Dog that attacked boy destroyed

HUELO, Maui — A dog that attacked a 6-year-old Makawao boy Monday was given a lethal injection yesterday by animal control officers.

The Maui Humane Society received a telephone tip about where the dog's owner, Scott Weston, lived and sent animal control officers to the house Wednesday in Huelo, said Aimee Anderson, animal control supervisor.

Weston wasn't there so they left a note. He later contacted the Humane Society and agreed to have the dog, an 8-year-old pure-bred Akita, destroyed.

Weston had taken the animal with him to a job painting a house on Ulele Street in Makawao, where the dog attacked a neighbor's child, Alex Pyle. Anderson said the Humane Society had no record of any previous incident involving the dog.

The boy is recovering at home after surgery to repair wounds to his scalp and face.
