UH's Gustin picked WAC's top preseason volleyball player

Sophomore Maja Gustin of the University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team was picked as the preseason Player of the Year for the 2001 Western Athletic Conference season.

Hawai'i, which was picked to win the WAC in 2001, placed three players on the All-WAC preseason team, the most of any school.

Junior setter Jennifer Carey and sophomore outside hitter Kim Willoughby join Gustin.

Gustin was a first-team All-WAC selection and shared co-Freshman of the Year honors with Willoughby in 2000. Carey and Willoughby were both second-team honorees last season.

BASEBALL

Central Maui wins division: Gered Mochizuki pitched a one-hitter as Central Maui defeated Parrish (Ore.), 6-0, Wednesday to claim the Senior Little League (14-16 years) division championship at Vancouver, Wash.

Maui advances to the Western Regional Tournament in Billings, Mont., starting on Sunday.

Shevis Shima had two doubles with two runs scored, and Royce Miyazono had a home run, double and two runs scored.

Earlier Wednesday, Central Maui defeated Parrish, 8-0, behind Ryan Racadio's two-hitter to force the championship game.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Riggers state championship: The Riggers 13th Annual State Beach Volleyball Championships will be held tomorrow and Sunday at Kuhio Beach.

Hawai'i's top men's and women's volleyball players, including former University of Hawai'i men's volleyball standouts, are expected to play.

Men's open and A divisions will be played tomorrow. Men's and women's open will be on Sunday. Competition will start at 9 a.m. both days. The finals will start approximately at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

BODYBUILDING

Matsuda wins title: Patrick Matsuda, 31, a Mililani High School graduate, won the middleweight division of the 2001 National Physique Committee's USA Bodybuilding and Fitness Contest.

The event took placed July 28 in Las Vegas. A former wrestler, Matsuda, 170 pounds, now lives in Bakersfield, Calif.

GOLF

Hilo's Whiting leads: Leah Whiting of Hilo took over the top spot yesterday at the American Junior Golf Association Marisco Funds Tournament at Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club in Windsor, Colo.

At the par-72, 5,856-yard course, Whiting overcame a two-stroke penalty to card a second-round 72. Her two-day total is 150, and she leads Alyssa Otero of Santa Fe, N.M., by one stroke heading into today's final round.

Christian Akau is tied for seventh in the boys division with a 146 after consecutive rounds of 73.

TENNIS

No. 2 seeds ousted in Kailua: Erik Sandblom and Daouda Senge Ndiaye upset the second-seeded team of Chris Leong and Ryan Livesay, 6-2, 6-4, last night in the semifinals of the Kailua Racquet Club's Men's Night Doubles.

Stefan Pampulov and Jan Tribler defeated Chad Shibuya and Gregg Takata, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to advance to tomorrow's 6 p.m final.
