Man charged in three bank robberies

Edward Dino Leiffer was indicted on three counts of robbery yesterday, but the FBI and Honolulu police are still searching for him.

Leiffer was charged with robbing the Kapahulu branch of City Bank on July 10, the Kane'ohe-Kahuhipa branch of American Savings Bank on July 28 and the Pearl City branch of American Savings Bank on July 30.

Witnesses described Leiffer as a Caucasian in his 30s with blond hair and a slender to medium build. He has been clean shaven and wearing a variety of baseball caps and T-shirts.

Japanese tourist robbed at gunpoint

Police are searching for five men and one woman who robbed a 17-year-old Japanese tourist at gunpoint Thursday night in Waikiki.

According to police, the robbery happened at 8 p.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center when the teen was approached by one of the men, who had a gun in his waistband.

A woman armed with a pocketknife, then demanded money from the teen. The robbers made off with $200 and ran away, police said. The teen was not injured.


Suspect held in church vandalism

A 24-year-old homeless man has been arrested in connection with vandalism at a Waikiki church in May, police said.

Police say the man smashed a statue at St. Augustine Church, 130 'Ohua Ave., on May 13.

The man was arrested Thursday on Rodgers Boulevard at 12:30 p.m. on suspicion of second-degree criminal property damage.
