HANALEI, Kaua'i — An old saying has finally become true in canoe paddling.

Maui no ka oi.

Specifically, the Hawaiian Canoe Club was the best at yesterday's Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta at Hanalei Bay.

The club from Kahului Harbor became the first Maui team to win the state title and only the second from a Neighbor Island to win it (Hanalei from Kaua'i was the first in 1982).

"What a beautiful feeling," said Paul Ka'uhane Lu'uwai, coach of Hawaiian's vaunted youth program. "It's been such a long process, to finally win it is almost too hard to believe. It really is a feeling of fulfillment."

Indeed, Hawaiian has been chasing the state title every year since 1985. That was the year it rebuilt itself into the Maui champion. It has been the Maui champ every year since, but until yesterday, that was where the recognition ended.

"From the outside looking in, we brought a lot of credibility today," said Hawaiian head coach Diane Ho. "But inside of all of us, we know who we are and what we can do. All along, we believed that anybody can win on any given day. We still do."

With the largest contingent in the state — state-record 34 crews — Hawaiian amassed 315 points to win the AAA (overall) division. Lanikai, which won the state title last year, was second with 303. O'ahu champion Outrigger was third with 301 and Kailua fourth with 241.

Kahana, another club from Maui, scored 124 to win the AA division for clubs with nine to 17 crews. Healani from O'ahu won the A division for small clubs with 72 points.

"It's not just a big day for us, it's a big day for Maui," Lu'uwai said.

Members of the Waikiki Surf Club run through a tunnel of team members after finishing their races.
As expected, Hawaiian got off to a fast start behind its youth paddlers. Hawaiian won the girls 12, boys 12, boys 13 and boys 18 races, and amassed 156 points in the youth races alone.

"I expected 130 points from them," Lu'uwai said. "But they scored almost half our points. They went above and beyond what we wanted from them."

Outrigger also won four youth races (girls 15, boys 15, boys 16, girls 18), but could not match Hawaiian's depth. Especially impressive was Outrigger's girls 15 crew, which finished well ahead of the rest of the field en route to its fourth consecutive state title against girls their age.

Lanikai won two youth races (girls 13, girls 14), and finished with 133 points at that stage of the regatta.

"I thought our kids did great," Lanikai head coach John Foti said. "Considering what Hawaiian was doing, we weren't that far behind."

What's more, Lanikai made a charge at Hawaiian behind its strength — its open men. In particular, Lanikai won the men's sophomore, junior and senior races, and placed third in open-4.

The senior victory was the 10th consecutive for Lanikai. The crew of Mike Pedersen, John Foti, Mike Judd, Kai Bartlett, Karel Tresnak Jr. and Jim Foti overcame a near-disastrous turn to edge Kai 'Opua by five seconds in the 1à-mile race.

"In the middle of the second turn, my paddle just went ca-rack!" said steersman Jim Foti, the only paddler who has been on all 10 Lanikai senior men's victories. "I slipped off my feet and went butt-up in the air."

Fortunately, Tresnak was sitting in the seat in front of Foti. Tresnak is also a steersman, and he completed the turn while Foti recovered his balance and grabbed a spare paddle.

"Once we made it out of that turn, the whole crew recovered and we got it going again," Jim Foti said.

Hanalei Bay on Kaua'i was teeming with paddlers and onlookers yesterday.
However, Lanikai's strength could not overcome a glaring weakness: it did not have any entries in the five open women's races.

"It was terribly frustrating," John Foti said. "All we could do was sit on the beach and watch the other teams rack up points on us."

Hawaiian, for example, scored 46 points in those five races, including a victory in the women's freshman race, while Outrigger got 52 points from its open women.

"Our women are very strong, people have just never noticed them," Ho said.

But stealing the show among the women was Kai 'Opua, which won the sophomore and prestigious senior race with the same crew: Carrie Sue Hendricks, Cheryl Villegas, Patty Eames, Cherisse Kelii, Jessie Eames and Jackie Taylor. Five of the six were on the winning Na Wahine O Ke Kai crew last September. Yesterday, they became the first Kai 'Opua crew to win the women's senior race in the state championships.

"We wanted to win it, but we didn't want the pressure to win it," said Taylor, explaining that the crew had not paddled together all season until yesterday.

Equally impressive, they won the women's senior race while paddling in lane 12 (out of 14). The higher-numbered lanes were in the deeper section of Hanalei Bay, and subject to more wind and currents.

Once the senior races were completed, the attention refocused on Hawaiian. By then, it held a significant lead over Outrigger and Lanikai, and the only question was whether it would be enough.

"I couldn't even watch the last few races, I was so nervous," Ho said.

Lanikai made it interesting, winning two of the last four races. However, that only pushed them past Outrigger for second.

"We had solid performances all day," John Foti said of Lanikai's regatta-high eight race victories. "We just didn't qualify enough crews."

Hawaiian's 34 registered crews (out of a possible 36) was five more than Outrigger and six more than Lanikai.

"We knew going in that they had more numbers than us," said Janna Arakaki, acting coach for Outrigger. "We just tried to stay positive and do what we had to do, and I think we did."

Outrigger's five race victories matched Hawaiian.

Ho said Hawaiian's surge of paddlers this year came after a disappointing third-place finish at last year's state championships.

"We didn't start planning this last week," she said. "We started planning it last November."

Entering the final race of the regatta — men's 35-older — Lanikai and Outrigger still had a shot at catching Hawaiian. However, Hawaiian placed third in that race to erase any doubts.

"We knew the pressure was on us," said Lu'uwai, who steered that crew. "Once we crossed that finish line, it was like 'Yes! We did it. We finally did it.' "

• AA division: Despite not winning a single race, Kahana walked away with its first state trophy. All season, the club from Lahaina played a distant role behind Hawaiian.

"We got third like every week," head coach Bear Keahi said. "But Hawaiian is in a different class from us. Our goal was to win our division and we did that."

Keaukaha from the Big Island was second with 115 points, while Ho'opili was third with 105. Hui Wa'a champion Lokahi was fourth with 104.

• A division: In the smallest division that featured the most teams (34), Healani won the women's novice B race early in the day and never surrendered the lead.

Healani's three-point edge over Wailea (72-69) prevented a Maui sweep of the first-place trophies. Waikiki Surf Club was third with 65.
