Juliet Lighter's program for self-improvement

 •  Miss Hawaii USA builds new life from inside out

Winning the title of Miss Hawaii USA isn't easy. But Juliet Lighter has set even higher expectations for herself at the national competition.

Here is her four-pronged strategy for the next five months:

• Physical: Lighter works out six days a week for about an hour at the gym and surfs at least twice a week. She's cut soda, rice and desserts out of her diet, though she admits to sneaking in her favorite brownies from Kaneohe Bakery.

• Mental: She surrounds herself with positive people who look out for her well-being. She doesn't invite negativity into her life.

• Spiritual: Every morning she wakes up and spends about 15 minutes thinking about how thankful she is. It's her form of prayer. "You can get caught up and forget why you're here," she said. "For every 10 things you complain about, there's a thousand things to be thankful for." Aside from going to church every Sunday, she also tries to memorize a scripture verse a day.

• Emotional: Her belief is simple: "If you love and accept yourself for who you are," she said, "anything is possible."
