HONOLULU

Policy changes for ZipLane

Starting at 7 a.m. today, vehicles with at least two occupants can use the Zip-Lane because of a policy change by the state Department of Transportation.

Before 7 a.m., vehicles entering the lane must have three or more occupants.

The ZipLane is open from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, except on state holidays.


Hawaiian dress subject of talk

As part of its "Celebration of Kupuna" series, Bishop Museum has invited Keone Nunes to share with the public his extensive research on Hawaiian hair styles, dress and tattooing. The talk will be given at Bishop Museum's Atherton Halau Aug. 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Titled "Pali Ke Kua, Mahina Ke Alo — Appearances, Fashion and Hairstyles of Hawaiians of Old," the presentation will examine museum collections, as well as early descriptions and sketches of Hawaiians upon western arrival.

Nunes, a crew member for the Hokule'a and Hawai'iloa voyaging canoes, has traveled throughout the Pacific as a lecturer on Hawaiian culture. He is a Hawaiian language expert with a bachelor's in anthropology who teaches hula and practices the art of traditional Hawaiian uhi tattooing.

Admission is free to members, $5 for the public and $3 for students. For details call Miki'ala Ayau at 848-4191.


Distribution of food begins

The Hawai'i Community Action Program Inc. will distribute rice, canned tuna, beans and other food to O'ahu residents tomorrow through Friday starting at 8 a.m. To be eligible, recipients must be certified at the distribution site, must bring picture identification and meet income criteria.

Judge named to new position

Judge Colette Y. Garibaldi recently was named deputy chief judge and administrative judge for all divisions of the district courts of the 1st Judicial Circuit (O'ahu) by Chief Justice Ronald T.Y. Moon.

Garibaldi, who has served as a judge of the District Court of the First Circuit since 1997, replaces Judge George Kimura, who had served as administrative judge since August of last year.


NORTH SHORE

Airfield closed to civilians

The state Department of Transportation advises that Dillingham Airfield will be closed to all civilian air activity from 8 a.m. tomorrow to 1 p.m. Friday for military air operations.

The military will be conducting extensive helicopter operations at the airfield.

During the airfield closure, tenants will be allowed to enter the airfield for administrative and maintenance activities but should be prepared to comply with all military requirements.

Radford to hold orientation

All students and parents who will be attending Radford High School for the first time are invited to attend an orientation in the cafeteria at 6 p.m. Aug. 16.

School administrators and students will give presentations. Information will be available on all school activities.
