Pearl City softball advances to World Series

The Pearl City Pearls beat Yuma Desert Heat (Ariz.), 4-0, yesterday in the championship game of the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth (16-under) Softball Championship at Calexico, Calif.

Pearl City advances to the World Series in Abbebville, La., on Aug. 11-16.

Miki Asamura allowed two hits in seven innings, and struck out eight. She was named the tournament MVP.

Other Pearls named to the all-tournament team were Charity Senas and Leo Sing Chow.

MORE SOFTBALL

• ASA champs: The Wailau Warriors of O'ahu won the ASA (18-under) Torrance (Calif.) Softball Tournament yesterday, beating Explosion (Calif.), 3-0.

Tina Young pitched a no-hitter for the Warriors.

Kate Robinson went 3-for-4, Zoe Bertelmann batted 2-for-3 and Young 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Warriors.

BASEBALL

• Wai'anae champs: Wai'anae beat California, 2-1, yesterday to capture the Baseball in Paradise (12-under) championship at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Wai'anae pitcher Aina Samson allowed three hits struck out five. David Mohika went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for Wai'anae.

• Kaua'i wins one, loses one: Kaua'i defeated the Southern California Knights, 7-4, in the championship game of the Baseball in Paradise 18-year-old division at Mid-Pacific field.

In the 15-year-old division, the Dallas N.Y. Yankees defeated Kaua'i, 18-6, in the title game, also at Mid-Pacific.

• Warriors win: The Hawai'i Warriors routed Waite Park (Minn.), 23-2, yesterday in the 10-under Cal Ripken League World Series in Vincennes, Ind.

The team from O'ahu scored seven runs each in the second and third innings, and eight runs in the fifth.

Buen Hatanaka, Reyn Kimura, and Travis Sato each had three hits, and Breland Almadova, Carlton Tanabe and Christian Stevens had two hits each for Hawai'i.

The series continues through Thursday.

• Shutout for Hawai'i: Hawai'i blanked Carson City (Nev.), 7-0, yesterday in the Babe Ruth 15-and-under Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament in El Segundo, Calif.

Shawn Kiriu allowed one hit and struck out six. Chris Balatico went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Hawai'i. The tournament continues through Wednesday, with the winner advancing on to the World Series in Hamilton Township, N.J., Aug. 17-25.

SURFING

• Machado wins Open: Rob Machado of Cardiff, Calif., rode a last-minute wave to win the $100,000 Philips U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Conditions ranged from 3-5 feet. A crowd of 62,000 attended the contest, according to meet organizers.

Machado beat Brazil's Marcelo Nunes 22.96 points to 22.84 for the $10,000 first prize. Nunes earned $5,000. Australian Toby Martin was third, winning $4,000.

Bobby Martinez of Santa Barbara, Calif., won the Billabong Junior Pro title.

Wai'anae's Sunny Garcia, the reigning world champ and last year's U.S. Open champion, was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Garcia was called for paddling interference and couldn't come up with big scores to recover.

HALF-MARATHON

• Kolekole winners: Louis Tomsic and Deidre Tennant were the male and female winners, respectively, Saturday at the 19th Kolekole Pass Half-Marathon.

Tomsic, 37, finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 16 seconds. David Mantemach was second in 1:20:56.6 and John Cowan third in 1:22:18.8.

Tennant, 29, finished in 1:26:06.3, followed by Angie Song-Rooney in 1:32:31.7 and Susan Dezso in 1:33:07.5.

The 13.1-mile race began at Watts Field on Schofield Barracks, traveled through Kolekole Pass in the Wai'anae Mountain range and ended at the Naval Magazine at Lualualei.
