Brust wins 112-mile Dick Evans Memorial bike race

Ray Brust of Team Boca won the 112-mile Dick Evans Memorial Bicycle Road Race Sunday, finishing in 4 hours, 55 minutes, 2.6 seconds.
Thomas Novikoff (Pacific Velo) finished second in 4:55:25.9 and Gary Shields (Hawai'i Cycling Club) was third in 4:55:35.5.
Monique Mata (Team Boca) was the first woman finisher in 5:00:09.3, followed by Michelle Foster (Pacific Velo) in 5:01:02.7 and Margaret Grenier (Hawai'i Cycling Club) in 5:30:28.0.
Allegra Erisman (Team Boca) was the top junior in 6:13:28. Team Boca took honors for the largest number of finishers (27) and Hawai'i Cycling Team won a trophy for team performance.
More than 125 cyclists were scheduled to race on the course that started in Hawai'i Kai, and moved west toward Kunia and around the North Shore, eventually winding up back in Hawai'i Kai.
YOUTH BASEBALL
Hawai'i reaches final: Michael Lam dived over the catcher to score on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning as Hawai'i defeated Hanford-Central (Calif.), 3-2, in the Babe Ruth (ages 15-under) Southwest Regional Tournament at El Segundo, Calif.
Mel Silva batted 3-for-4 for Hawai'i, which plays for the championship tomorrow.
'Aiea triumphs: 'Aiea scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat La Marata (Calif.), 7-6, in a Little League Junior (age 13) Western Regional Tournament game at Vancouver, Wash.
Lance Powell had four hits, and Kyson Morikuni, Blaze Moleta, Ian Mopas and Christian Johnson each had two hits for 'Aiea.
'Ewa loses: Rueben Rodriguez hit a solo homer in the seventh inning as Arizona defeated 'Ewa, 8-7, in the Little League Major (ages 11-12) Western Regional Tournament at San Bernardino, Calif.
'Ewa led 6-0 after two innings.
Northern California beat 'Ewa, 7-5, on Sunday.
Warriors fall: Westfield (N.J.) defeated the Hawaii Warriors, 13-11, yesterday in the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken World Series (ages 10-under) at Vincennes, Ind.
Buen Hatanaka and Carlton Tanabe each had three hits for the Warriors.
SOCCER
Hilo takes nationals: Hilo's under-19 girls team won the AYSO National Games soccer championship for the second year in a row Sunday.
Hilo defeated El Cajon, Calif., 3-1 in the championship game at West Point, N.Y.
Invitations to the National Games were selected by lottery. All AYSO teams were eligible to enter the lottery, but no other team from Hawai'i got a bid.
Hilo's coach is Joel Kamelamela. Last year, Kelsey Hiraishi was coach of the team that won the national tournament at Albuquerque, N.M.
Bulls capture Cup: The Honolulu Soccer Bulls 17U (ages 17-under) team defeated San Diego in overtime, 5-4, to win the Surf Cup in San Diego yesterday.
The invitation-only tournament started last Friday.
PADDLING
Striking gold: Hawai'i Canoe & Kayak Team members won three gold medals at the USA National Championship, which ended Sunday at Sacramento, Calif.
Megan Bussey won the intermediate women's 500-meter kayak race and Geordan Purdy won the intermediate men's 500.
Peter Newton teamed with Angel Perez of Miami to win the senior men's 1,000 race.
The team also won five silver and three bronze medals.
GOLF
Carll leads: Kevin Carll of Hapuna Golf Course shot a 69 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the AT&T Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course.
Kevin Hayashi of Hilo Municipal shot a 71, followed by Ron Castillo Jr. (Hapuna), Tommy Hines (unattached) and Jay Taise (Hapuna) all at 72.
Dennis Rose of Turtle Bay Resort Golf Course and Ron Castillo Sr. of Ala Wai Golf Course share the lead in the senior flight at 73.
The tournament continues today.
JUDO
Silver start: In his first international competition, Michael Fujiuchi of Honolulu's Hodokan Judo Club took second place in the male under-15 years, under-119 pounds division of the U.S. International Championships at Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday.
More than 200 athletes from 21 countries competed.
WATER POLO
USA loses: Goalie Brandon Brooks of Honolulu made 14 saves but the USA Men's Junior National Team lost to Greece, 5-4, in three overtimes yesterday in the fifth-place game at the Samartzidis Cup in Thessalonica, Greece.
