Developer seeks rule changes

The developer of a planned $25 million interior-design center at the former Flamingo Chuckwagon site on Kapi'olani Boulevard is seeking several changes to area development rules.

Honolulu Design Center LLC is asking the Hawaii Community Development Authority, which governs redevelopment in Kaka'ako, to increase the 100,000-square-foot project's height limit by 21 feet on average, to maximums between 65 feet and 80 feet.

Other requested changes would allow the retail complex a glass curtain wall, reduced yard space along Waimanu Street and 262 parking stalls, about 60 fewer than required.

Meadow Gold owner in black

Suiza Foods Corp., the nation's largest dairy processor and owner of Hawai'i's Meadow Gold Dairies, said yesterday its second-quarter profits rose slightly despite higher prices for raw milk.

Suiza said it earned $34.6 million, or $1.11 per share in the quarter ended June 30, compared with $33.5 million, $1.04 per share, a year earlier. That matched analysts' expectations.
