Visiting beachgoer rescued on Maui
KA'ANAPALI, Maui A 65-year-old Japanese woman was in critical condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center yesterday after being pulled unconscious from the ocean off the Sheraton Maui.
The visitor from Chiba-shi, Japan, apparently had broken her neck in the shorebreak, then drifted into deeper water and nearly drowned, said police Sgt. Max Kincaid. Bystanders brought the woman to shore where three doctors who happened to be nearby administered CPR until paramedics arrived.

Center to be open for Perseid viewing
HILO, Hawai'i The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy will be open from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday for free viewing of the Perseid meteor shower.
Hugh Grossman, a tour guide at the 9,300-foot-elevation visitor information station at Hale Pohaku, said that under ideal conditions, "it is not unusual ... to see one or two meteors per minute."
Traffic restrictions eased on Haleakala
MAUI
HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui Road construction in the Summit District has progressed to a point where restrictions on large buses, bicycle tours and numbers of vehicles have been relaxed.
However, acting Summit District Ranger Mike Ing cautions that construction continues at Kalahaku Overlook, which remains closed to visitor traffic. In addition, large buses, trailers and bicycles will be prohibited Monday to Aug. 15.

- 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Hyatt Regency Kaua'i.
- 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
- 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Kaua'i Marriott Resort.
- 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Prince Clubhouse.
