Gilbride might switch to baseball

By Stephen Tsai

Reserve quarterback Kevin Gilbride, who moonlights as a college baseball player, is not expected to be included on the University of Hawai'i football team's training camp roster.

Newcomers are to report to training camp Monday, and the returning players are required to report no later than next Wednesday. The first team practice is Aug. 16.

NCAA rules limit rosters to 105 players for the two weeks of two-a-day practices. The roster may expand on Aug. 27, the first day of the fall semester, when teams are limited to 20 hours of practice and meetings each week.

But Gilbride, a 6-foot-2 junior who is deciding on whether to pursue baseball full-time, is not expected to compete in two-a-day practices. This summer, Gilbride has played baseball with the Hawai'i Island Movers, and has not participated in any football drills. He could not be reached for comment yesterday.

"It doesn't look like he's going to be one of the 105," said Gilbride's uncle, offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh.

UH coach June Jones said even if Gilbride chooses to only play for the UH baseball team, he will remain on football scholarship until he graduates. Jones also has kept open a spot for Gilbride, inviting 103 players to training camp.

Gilbride redshirted at Brigham Young in 1998, then sat out the 1999 football season after transferring to UH.

"People have been encouraging him to stick to baseball," Cavanaugh said. "The famous word is, he has a lot of 'upside.' I'd love to see him out there (on a football field), but I try to stay out of it."

Here's the upcoming practice schedule:

Aug. 16: Cooke Field, 7:30 p.m.-9:30. Aug. 17-18: Grass field, 8:30 a.m.-11:30; 3:45 p.m.-5:15. Aug. 20-25: Grass field, 8:30 a.m.-11:30; 3:45 p.m.-5:15. Aug. 27-Sept. 1: Grass field, 7 a.m.-9. Sept. 3-6: Grass field, 7 a.m.-9. Sept. 7: Cooke Field, 4 p.m.-5:30.
