Carll leads stroke play golf

Kevin Carll shot a second-round 73 yesterday to keep his advantage going into today's final round of the AT&T Aloha Section PGA Stroke Play Championship at Mauna Kea Golf Course.
Carll, 26, is in his third year as a Hapuna pro. He stands at 2-under-par 142 for the tournament. Hilo Muni pro Kevin Hayashi is two shots back and Ron Castillo Jr., Carll's boss, is third at 145. All shot 73 yesterday.
Brendan Moynahan, an Experience at Koele pro, had the day's best round, a 4-under-par 68. He hit 17 greens in regulation and birdied Nos. 3, 4, 9, 14 and 15, with his only bogey at the 12th.
Hilo Muni's Rodney Acia clinched a spot in the National Club Senior Pro Championship, at Port St. Lucie, Fla., in October, with a 36-hole qualifying score of 147.
Wie, by one: A dozen players led by 11-year-old Michelle Wie broke 80 in the opening round of the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Wie, who won the Jennie K. Invitational here in May, played the back nine in 1-under par to finish at 1-over 73. Kathy Tsukada, who finished seventh at the Jennie K. in her first competitive tournament, is one shot back. Rachel Kyono and Merynn Ito, the past two girls state high school champions, are tied for third at 75.
Today's second round and tomorrow's final round begin at approximately 8:30 a.m.
YOUTH SOFTBALL
Na Kolohe 10th: Na Kolohe finished 10th among 32 teams in the American Softball Association's 18-and-under Western National Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
In its final two games, Na Kolohe beat the Orcutt (Calif.) All-Stars, 8-0, as winning pitcher Crissy Moefu also batted 3-for-3, and Invasion (Spokane, Wash.) beat Na Kolohe, 5-1.
Na Kolohe finished the tournament with a 4-3 record.
Blastaz ninth: The Wai'anae Blastaz finished ninth among 48 teams in the American Softball Association's Junior Olympic Fastpitch 14-under National Championships in Spokane, Wash.
Sarah Weisskopf and Malama Manuma each won two games for the Blastaz, who won their first four games before losing two in a row in the double-elimination tournament.
Austi Paris hit a three-run homer in the first game, Melissa Renshaw hit a grand slam in the second, Weisskopf had three RBIs in the third and Manuma pitched a two-hitter in the fourth.
SENIOR GAMES
Gold rush: A 45-athlete contingent from Hawai'i brought home five gold, four silver and eight bronze medals from the National Senior Olympics, which was held last month in Baton Rouge, La.
Gold-medal winners were: Francis Baysa (bowling, men's 60-64 division), Barbara Hubbard (tennis, women's 50-54), Jim Provines (tennis, men's 60-64), Peggy Regentine (triathlon, women's 50-54) and Carol Murry (triathlon, women's 60-64).
Also, Lionel Low won a gold medal in the triple jump at the USA National Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships, also held last month in Baton Rouge. Low leaped 32 feet, 5 inches in the men's 60-64 age division.
