2 arrested after fatal hit-and-run accident in Kalihi

A 26-year-old Kane'ohe man was killed and two people were in police custody today after a hit-and-run collision in Kalihi, police said.
Police said they were investigating whether the two cars were speeding and if alcohol was involved in the crash.

The collision happened just after 2 a.m. when a Nissan 200 SX and Chevrolet Dually truck, both heading mauka, collided at Bernice and Kalihi Streets just before Kapalama Elementary School.

After the collision, the truck veered right and hit a traffic sign post, ran through a yard fence and slammed into a mango tree at 1640 Bernice St.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police the two people in the Nissan stopped, got out of their car, then fled the scene. Police tracked the registered owners of the car to a Dominis Street address in Makiki and arrested a 24-year-old man and 37-year-old woman.
The suspected driver was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and failure to render aid. The woman was arrested on suspicion of first-degree hindering prosecution.
Police closed a portion of Bernice and Kalihi streets for more than six hours while they investigated.
