Tip-off
Comedians D.L. Hughley and Pat Morita plan Hawai'i show

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

Darryl "D.L." Hughley is bringing his comedy show, "An Evening with D.L. Hughley," to the Hawai'i Theatre Sept. 2, accompanied by fellow actor-comedian Pat Morita, who will be marking his return to the stand-up stage.

TV viewers know Hughley from "The Hughleys," a series that began on ABC and has moved to UPN. Morita has had a recurring role on the series.

Hughley is an emerging stand-up who tours extensively, alone and with others. He was part of the "Kings of Comedy Tour" with Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac — one of the top-grossing comedy tours ever, playing 50 cities and prodding filmmaker Spike Lee to do his "The Original Kings of Comedy" movie.

Morita, best known for his Mr. Miyagi role in "The Karate Kid" film series, earned a best supporting actor nomination for the first of the three features. The former Hawai'i resident most recently had a recurring role in the Island-based "Baywatch Hawai'i" TV show and provided the voice of the Emperor in "Mulan." He also is associated with the Arnold role in "Happy Days" TV series. In his pre-acting life, he did stand-up comedy interspersed with a little singing.

Tickets: $46.50 and $36.50, on sale at the box office starting today. Reservations: 528-0506.

Canned Heat plays Aug. 31 club party

Canned Heat, the boogie blues band from the 1960s, will stage a Boogie Blues Dance Party on Aug. 31 at South Seas Village at the Hawaiian Hut, 410 Atkinson Blvd.

The San Francisco-based band is expected to perform songs for listening and dancing, including such hits as "On the Road Again," "Goin' Up to the Country" and "Let's Work Together."

On a world tour since earlier this year, the group currently features John "J.P." Paulus on guitar and bass, Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra on drums and vocals, Stanley "The Baron" Behrens on harmonica, sax flute and vocals, "Dallas" Hodge on vocals and guitar, and Greg "The Gator" Kage on bass and vocals.

Over the years, Canned Heat has frequented numerous festivals, large and small, including the Monterey Pop, the Newport Pop, the original Woodstock and the Sturgis Motorcycle Run USA. The group also has collaborated, in concert and on records, with such blues icons as John Lee Hooker, Little Richard and John Mayall, and its music has had renewed prominence on TV spots promoting Miller beer, Chevrolet, Pepsi and McDonald's.
