Colorful options

Want to improve your game? Try colored sunglass lenses. Colored lenses were developed to reduce glare and minimize eyestrain under specific conditions, according to Sunglass Hut. Besides the traditional gray, amber and brown, options include:

  • Vermillion or rose: for skiing, tennis and golf; provides good perception in low light while allowing a tolerable level of light transmission in bright sunlight.
  • Green: for many sports; provides contrast in low light and reduces eyestrain in bright light.
  • Yellow: for skiing and other fast-reaction sports; provides excellent depth perception and contrast in low light; the down side is considerable color distortion.

Design classes offered

The Hawaii College of Design, which begins classes this fall, is big on variety. The list of courses covers just about every facet of design, from architecture to fashion, interiors to furniture, lighting to landscaping.

The college is designed to offer short seminars (45-90 minutes) and classes (18-40 hours) in various facets of design, programs manager Michael Colgan said. Using local professionals as instructors, the college targets a growing number of industry employers, employees and consumers interested in design issues and practices.

The courses will be held, based upon demand, at various rented or donated spaces around O'ahu, Colgan said. Costs for a typical six-week session will run about $200 to $250, he said. For details or a full list of courses, call Colgan at 595-8071, fax 595-4261 or mail to: Hawaii College of Design, 350 Ward Ave., No. 106, Honolulu, HI 96814.
