NORTH SHORE

'Road rage' hearing delayed

A preliminary hearing was postponed from yesterday until Monday for two men charged with attempted murder in a "road rage" shooting on the North Shore last weekend.

District Judge Tenney Tongg rescheduled the hearing for Clint Soliven, 20, and Robert Nunies, 18, because Nunies' attorney had to appear at a federal hearing.

Tongg rescheduled the hearing to 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Soliven and Nunies, 18, face charges of second- degree attempted murder, use of a firearm in a commission of a felony and use of a firearm on a public roadway.

According to police, the two were in a car on Kamehameha Highway near Hale'iwa late Saturday night when another car overtook them.

The two later pulled alongside the other car and fired two shots, police said.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether the two men must stand trial on the charges.

Historic sites to be cleared

Work continues at two important Kailua historic sites this weekend from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kawainui Marsh.

Volunteers will hike to Holomakani Heiau to clear vegetation from the site to help avoid further damage to the structure by off-road vehicles. Anyone interested in joining the group can meet midway on Kapa'a Quarry Road.

A second group will visit the Na Pohaku o Hauwahine site to water native plants, clear a new area for planting and work in the marsh. This group will meet at the entrance to the site located near the Kapa'a Waste Disposal Transfer Station.

The projects are sponsored by the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation and Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi.

To volunteer, show up or contact Chuck Burrows at 595-3922 or e-mail him at cburrow@aloha.net.

Kailua park project begins

The city began a $277,900 project this week to improve playing courts and to build a mini skate court at Kailua District Park.

The construction will include resurfacing two basketball courts and rebuilding two volleyball courts near the park's multi-purpose building. The volleyball courts will will also be getting new lights.

The project calls for a mini skate court that will be about half the size of the volleyball court. The city will provide a concrete surface and will fence the area.

The Association of Skateboarders in Hawaii will provide equipment for the skate park.

Two years ago, the association and the city tore down a skate ramp at the park with the intention of building a bigger and better facility.

That facility will be located at Keolu Park and groundbreaking is set for Aug. 20.
