Rescuers look for 95-year-old hiker
Honolulu Fire Department rescue squads searched late last night for a missing 95-year-old hiker on the Maunawili Falls trail. The man was last seen at 12:30 p.m. yesterday, and his tools were found about 300 yards up the trail around 4:30 p.m. The man's family reported him missing at 8 p.m.
Air One and several civilians searched for the man.
Fifth teen arrested in beating case
Police arrested a 17-year-old Wai'anae boy yesterday in the July 14 beating death of William Van Winkle. The boy is the fifth teenager arrested in the case.
Arrested at the Wai'anae police station, the boy is being held at Hale Ho'omalu pending a family court hearing. So far, two 18-year-olds have been charged with second-degree murder. One 15-year-old and one 16-year-old have also been arrested.
Police expect to make two more arrests.
Witnesses told police that a group of about seven people beat Van Winkle to death after he nearly ran into one of them on his bicycle.
Police hunt man in Wai'anae stabbing
Police are looking for a man, 28, who stabbed another man Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Hanalei Street in Wai'anae. According to police, the two men are brothers who were arguing.
The victim, 27, drove himself to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Center and then to Kaiser Hospital in Moanalua.
The suspect was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and green surf shorts. He has fair complexion, black hair and brown eyes and is about 5 feet 11 and 230 pounds.
Soldier charged in domestic case
Police have charged a Schofield Barracks soldier in the stabbing of his wife and her Navy friend during a domestic argument Tuesday morning in Pearl City.
James E. Acosta, 37, was charged with two counts of second-degree attempted murder, kidnapping, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and violating an order of protection. His bail was set at $100,000.
Acosta is accused of stabbing his wife, Ester Acosta, 32, and her friend, Robert Jackson, 38.
Police said the husband blocked a car driven by his wife and stabbed her several times near the intersection of Ho'ohulu Street and Ho'oha'aheo Place.
The husband then stabbed Jackson, who was in another car, police said.
After stabbing Jackson, the husband pulled his wife out of her car and stabbed her several more times before driving her to the Tripler Army Medical Center, police said.
Both Jackson and Acosta's wife were expected to recover from their injuries, hospital officials said.
Drive-by robber took man's wallet
Police yesterday were searching for a man who robbed a 21-year-old motorist in a drive-by robbery Wednesday night in Waimalu.
They said the robbery happened at 11:45 p.m. as the motorist was stopped at a traffic light at Mo-
analua Road and Kaonohi Street.
A man got out of a car that had pulled up alongside, opened the motorist's door, told the man he had a gun and stole his wallet.
The robber fled in the car, driven by another man, police said.
