Man who died while diving identified

LANA'I CITY, Lana'i — A man who died Wednesday while scuba diving off Lana'i has been identified as Richard J. Hightower, 41, of Sugarland, Texas.

Hightower had joined a dive excursion on the Endeavor out of Maui and was diving with a group about a half-mile off the southwest coast of Lana'i, said police Lt. Darrell Johnson. When the group surfaced around 11:30 a.m., Hightower indicated he was having trouble breathing. He was brought aboard the dive boat and fell unconscious. The crew performed CPR and brought the man into Manele Harbor. He was taken to Lana'i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
