Windward takes Legion title

Kawika Kekaula went 4-for-4 as Windward defeated 'Aiea 5-3 to win the American Legion baseball championship tournament at Hans L'Orange Field Wednesday night.

Windward will represent Hawai'i at the American Legion (18-under) Western Regional at Salt Lake City, Aug. 16-20.

Kekaula, who also scored a run, was The Advertiser's high school Player of the Year this year for the state champion Kailua Surfriders.

Clayton Alayon pitched eight innings for Windward, allowing one earned run, while scattering seven hits and striking out three. Relief pitcher Ikaika Lester pitched the ninth, striking out two.

Windward (5-1 in the tournament) trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

Kelii Alcon and Travis Hayashida each had two hits, including a double, for Windward. Alcon drove in two runs.

Casey Onaga and Ross Akimoto each had two hits for 'Aiea (3-2).

In other youth baseball tournaments:

• 'Aiea beat Carlsbad, Calif., 10-8, on Wednesday to advance to today's championship finals of the Little League Junior (13-14) Western Region Tournament at Vancouver, Wash.

A two-run double by Shawn Ha'o capped a four-run sixth inning for 'Aiea.

'Aiea (2-0) will play the winner of last night's Carlsbad-Sacramento elimination game in the double-elimination tournament.

• 'Ewa finished 1-3 in pool play and was eliminated at the Little League (11-12) Western Regional Tournament after a 9-5 loss to Green Valley (Nev.) yesterday at San Bernadino, Calif.

The top four teams in pool play advanced to the semifinals, which start Sunday.

GOLF

• Maui golfer qualifies: A 15-year-old golfer from Lahaina, Maui, has earned a berth on the United States team that will play in the Junior Ryder Cup in Ireland.

Shaun Felechner, who will be a sophomore at Lahainaluna High School, was one of four who qualified in the boys' 13-15 age division. Felechner competed in the PGA Junior Series, which ended yesterday at the Eagle Crest Resort's Ridge Course in Redmond, Ore.

The PGA Junior Series point standings determined the Junior Ryder Cup berths. Points were awarded in each event for boys and girls who finish in the top 15 in the 13-15 and 16-17 age divisions.

Felechner earned 240 points to qualify. The top qualifier in the boys 13-15 division, Colin Wilcox of Camarillo, Calif., had 302.5 points.

The 12-member team, ages 14-16, will represent the United States Sept. 25-26 at the Kildare Hotel & Golf Club in Straffan, near Dublin.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Seven to championships: Seven Hawai'i track and field athletes were named to the Pacific Southwest Regional team and will compete in the Hershey Track and Field Championships in Hershey, Pa., tomorrow.

The Hawai'i athletes include:

• Kylee Ah Choy, Kamehameha Schools (Ka Makani Ola Track Club), girls 11-12 year-old softball throw;

• Kathleen Cadiente, Wilcox Elementary, Lihue, Kaua'i (Kaua'i County Parks and Recreation), girls 9-10 standing long jump;

• Kevin Cadiente, Wilcox Elementary (Kaua'i County Parks and Recreation), boys 13-14 200-meter run.

• Derek Fainberg, Wailupe Elementary (Hawai'i Kai Track Club), boys 11-12 softball throw.

• Kristina Noga, (Waipahu Recreation Center), girls 13-14 softball throw;

• Bronson Tanaka, King Intermediate (Kane'ohe Wildcats Track Club), boys 11-12 400-meter run;

• Erin Woolridge, Kalama Intermediate (Maui County Parks and Recreation); girls 13-14 200-meter run.

The athletes each received two all-expense paid trips to the meet. Eight regional teams from across the United States and Canada will compete.
