A 26-year-old Kane'ohe man was killed and two people were in police custody today after a hit-and-run collision in Kalihi, police said.

Police said they were investigating whether the cars were speeding and if alcohol was involved in the crash.

The collision happened just after 2 a.m. when a Nissan 200SX and Chevrolet truck, both heading mauka, collided at Bernice and Kalihi streets just before Kapalama Elementary School.

After the collision, the truck veered right and hit a traffic sign post, ran through a yard fence and slammed into a mango tree at 1640 Bernice St.

The driver died at the scene.

Witnesses told police the two people in the Nissan stopped, got out of their car, then got back in and drove away. The owners of the car were tracked to a Dominis Street address in Makiki, where police arrested a 24-year-old man and 37-year-old woman.
