Two teens charged in death of man

Two Kalihi teenagers were charged yesterday in the death of 59-year-old Benjamin Costa Amarino Jr., who lived on Pauahi Street and whose body was found in the River Street canal Aug. 1.

Pedro Velarde and Alvin Samau, both 18, have been charged with second-degree murder. Amarino's body was found floating in Nu'uanu Stream downstream from the Kukui Street bridge.

The medical examiner said Amarino drowned after being hit on the head.

Elderly man found a mile from home

A search for a 94-year-old man who wandered away from his Waimanalo home Thursday ended when he was found yesterday morning in the hills nearby.

Nobuo Kaneshiro was found by a hiker at about 9:15 a.m. on Telegraph Hill above the New Town & Country Stables in Waimanalo, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Ken Tejada. The spot is more than a mile away from his Kumuhau Street home.

Kaneshiro was in good condition, but a little weak, and was airlifted from the trail, Tejada said. Kaneshiro was taken to the Castle Medical Center for observation.
