Firm cited for waste hazards
The state has assessed a fine of $57,500 against Storage Services Inc. and its general manager William Mahas for hazardous waste violations at the company's abandoned metal recycling facility at the Kenai Industrial Park in Kapolei.
According to the Health Department, Storage Services processed and disposed of derelict and damaged cars, but stopped doing business about a year ago.
Health inspectors found 19 mislabeled 55-gallon drums, some leaking used motor oil, and a pile of old tires left on the property.
In addition to the fine, Mahas and Storage Services have been ordered to comply with state hazardous waste rules.
They have 20 days to respond to the complaint.

'Weed' meeting scheduled
A meeting to bring Weed & Seed crime-fighting measures to 'Ewa Beach will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Friendship Youth Center on Renton Road in 'Ewa.
Weed & Seed coordinator Maile Kanemura will give a presentation at the meeting, which continues previous planning and will allow for more public input.
Weed & Seed is a collaborative law enforcement effort among federal, state and city authorities to reclaim dangerous neighborhoods by working to prevent crime.
The program targets violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity, and depends on community efforts and tough legal penalties to "weed out" crime. Crime prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization then "seed" a safer community.
The Wai'anae community also is trying to start a Weed & Seed program along the Leeward Coast.
For details, call Kanemura at 543-2216.
Sewer water leaks into Lake Wilson
Sewage water leaked from a broken pump system at the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant into Lake Wilson early yesterday, city officials said.
The spill started at about 2 a.m. and was stopped at 9 a.m. About 5,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater flowed into the lake before the problem was corrected.
The state Department of Health was notified and signs were posted that warn against swimming and fishing in the lake until tests confirm that contamination is no longer a problem.
