Classes explore music learning

Classroom teachers, music specialists, physical educators and others with a heart for the arts are invited to workshops presented by the Hawai'i Orff-Schulwerk Association, or HOSA, a nonprofit organization that supports Carl Orff's way of teaching music.

Orff was an early 20th-century composer from Austria who was committed to the education of children. Orff-Schulwerk is a teaching and learning approach that incorporates words, songs, instruments and movement. The workshop schedule:

  • 9 am.-3 p.m. Aug. 17 at Punahou School: "Building and Using Marimbas in School and Community"
  • 9 a.m.- noon Sept. 8 at Sacred Hearts Academy: "Hawaiian Legends and Hula for Elementary"
  • 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 27 at Sacred Hearts Academy: "Children's Movement and Performance Standards"
  • 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 16, 2002, at Sacred Hearts Academy: "The Orff-Schulwerk Process ... Making the Connections"

Each full-day workshop costs $55, half-day workshops, $35, with discounts for HOSA members and those taking all four workshops. Registration is recommended. Call 262-5387.
