The Lady Techsters have won three national championships and made 13 Final Four appearances. They return every starter from last year's sixth-ranked team, including senior Ayana Walker. The honorable mention All-American is currently training with Team USA for the World University Games.
The Wahine open their season Nov. 17, against Washington State, in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic. The next week, NCAA Tournament teams Penn State and Stanford are in the eight-team Wahine Classic, along with Hawai'i and Oklahoma State, who played each other in the WNIT quarterfinals here in March.
It was nearly April when the Wahine's longest season ended. They lost at New Mexico in the semifinals of the WNIT, to finish 26-8. Hawai'i traveled more than 45,000 miles during the season.
That didn't include Ruston, La., where Louisiana Tech will be waiting on Feb. 7. The teams also play at Stan Sheriff Center a month earlier. The WAC season begins Dec. 28 at Boise State another new member. The conference tournament will be March 5-9 at Tulsa. The Wahine return WAC Freshman of the Year April Atuaia and Janka Gabrielova. Both were on the conference's all-newcomer team last season. They added four recruits Punahou point guard Milia McFarlane, freshman Chelsea Wagner, Oregon's 4A state player of the year, Jade Abele from Australia and Arijana Sijercic from Bosnia.
Former Wahine Maj Forsberg will graduate today with a bachelors of business administration in finance, international business and management information systems, with a minor in speech.
