Kaua'i girl longest jumper in nationals

Katherine Cadiente from Lihu'e, Kaua'i, won the standing long jump for girls ages 9-10 yesterday at the National Hershey Track and Field Championships in Hershey, Pa.

Cadiente leaped 6 feet, 11 inches.

Six other Hawai'i participants, competing for the Pacific Southwest Regional team, also placed in the top six of their events.

Two girls placed third in their respective age divisions in the Softball Throw.

Noela "Tina" Noga (ages 13-14 division) and Kylee Ah Choy (11-12) each placed third in the softball throw. Noga threw the ball 189 feet, 10 inches and Choy threw it 163 feet, 5 inches.

Kevin Cadiente, Erin Wooldridge, Derek Fainberg and Bronson Tanaka each placed sixth with these marks: Cadiente (13-14) 26.14 seconds in 200-meter dash, Wooldridge (13-14) 29.91 seconds in 200, Fainberg (11-12) 163-3 in softball throw and Tanaka (11-12) 1:04.97 in 400.


SURFING

• Longboarders advance: Five Hawai'i surfers advanced to the third round of the Oxbow World Longboard Championship in 3- to 5-foot waves yesterday at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Former world champion Dino Miranda of Waialua led the Hawai'i contingent, scoring a total of 21.35 (out of 30) in his first-round victory. Also winning first-round heats from Hawai'i were Duane DeSoto, Lance Ho'okano and Bonga Perkins. With their first-round victories, all four advanced directly to the third round.

Another Hawai'i surfer, Zane Aikau, did not win his first-round heat, but went on to upset No. 6 seed Zack Howard of California in the loser-out second round.

Six others from Hawai'i have yet to surf in the second round: Kekoa Uemura, Keola Rapoza, David Kinoshita, Rusty Keaulana, Chris Vandervoort and Kapono Nahina.

The event is the final stop on the inaugural World Longboard Tour. All competitors on the tour have to ride boards at least 9 feet long.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Good for fifth: Hawai'i's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong placed fifth in the FIVB Beach Volleyball event at Ostende, Belgium. The sixth-seeded duo won three elimination matches, then lost a three-set match to third-seeded Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde, 21-19, 17-21 and 19-17 yesterday.

Metzger and Wong scored elimination wins over 19th-seeded Niklos Berger and Oliver Stamm, 21-15 and 21-19, 24th-seeded Agustin Correa and Fabio Diez ,20-22, 21-16 and 15-13, and 16th-seeded Roberto Lopes and Franco Neto, 21-19 and 23-21.

• Champions of Waikiki: Alika Williams and Stevie Li defeated Troy Hotz and Keoki Shupe, 11-4, in sudden death yesterday to win the Iams Players Championship, a beach volleyball tournament held at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Heide Ilustre and Tanya Fuamatu defeated Laurie Kemp and Linn Sumida, 15-1, to win the women's division.


YOUTH SOFTBALL

• Ho'onua falls: Ho'onou of Kapolei was eliminated from the Western National Girls B Fastpitch Tournament (ages 12-under) after losing to Santee, Calif., 7-0, yesterday. Earlier, Ho'onou defeated the Clovis (Calif.) Bullets, 3-0.


YOUTH BASEBALL

• West O'ahu wins: Jayson Yoshimura allowed three hits and struck out 12 over 5 1/3 innings as West O'ahu defeated Guam, 10-2, in the Babe Ruth South Pacific Regional (ages 11-12) yesterday at Central O'ahu Park.
