Michiyo Uyenoyama, Buddhist minister, dead at 81

Michiyo Nakamura Uyenoyama, ordained as the Rev. Chishun Uyenoyama in 1991, died May 10 in Torrance, Calif., at the age of 81.

Uyenoyama is formerly of Hilo.

She was born in 1919 in Kurtistown and attended Hilo Business College. She was active in Hilo Boys Club and coached Little League Baseball.

Uyenoyama established a bride school for Japanese women marrying American servicemen and organized a Red Cross program for Amerasian orphans.

In 1989, she went to Japan to study Buddhism and in 1991 was ordained a Buddhist minister.

Uyenoyama, who was cremated, is survived by her son, Delta Uyenoyama; two daughters, Maude Okamura and June Uyenoyama; sisters Lynette Blain, Lillie Nakamura and Violet Mizutari; brother Clyde Nakamura and six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Borthwick Hawaii Funeral Home.

Visitation with family will be from 1 to 2 p.m.
