The Left Lane
Bruddah Iz in bronze

Contributions are needed for a bust of late vocalist Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
The Duke Kahanamoku Family Foundation needs help from fans of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. The foundation has commissioned a bronze bust of the late vocalist from sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer, who created a similar-sized bust of Gabby Pahinui now on display at the Waikiki Shell. She will work from pictures provided by Kamakawiwo'ole's family and his record label, the Mountain Apple Co.

Project coordinator Liz Rizzo said only 5 percent of the sculpture's $37,000 cost had been raised so far, but they're banking on an upcoming promotion: Foodland and Sack N Save stores will match every dollar contributed Sept. 1-30, receiving contributions at all checkstands. Or send donations to the Duke Kahanamoku Family Foundation, P.O. Box 4616, Kailua-Kona, HI, 96745.

Where will the memorial be placed? Rizzo said the group will work with the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts to find a spot "where it would get the most exposure."

Information: Liz Rizzo at 842-8314.

Fashion's front lines

From time to time, stylist Dean Christopher of Manoa sends us reports on what's up in New York, Paris or Milan, where he works in creative development and image management for top fashion houses, including Chanel and Jil Sander. He spent most of July in Europe, checking out what will be in for spring, 2002. Here's a synopsis:

Plenty of pants! From full-legged to skin-tight, for day or night, short or long. Lots of texture: ruching, shirring, smocking, embroideries and silky fringes dangling off hemlines and belt edges.

An explosion of "surreal Technicolor" as well as fruity colors like strawberry and lime.

Asian influences such as mandarin collars.

A resurgence of bohemian and Gypsy-inspired themes "slit necks, bell sleeve tunic tops of sheer cotton voile with Moroccan hand-knotted details." Unexpected juxtapositions of bohemian with bourgeois, silky smooth with crusty embellishments, fluid with firm.
