Four more arrested following jail shakedown

Four more inmates from O'ahu Community Correctional Center were arrested on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia and crystal methamphetamine as a result of the three-day prison shakedown last week, public safety officials said yesterday.

The four were housed in OCCC's Laumaka Furlough Cell, said Sidney Hayakawa, deputy director of law enforcement for the department of public safety. He said suspected crystal methamphetamine was found hidden in a bed frame. Also a makeshift ice pipe, made out of a pen and long strip of aluminum foil, were found in the mattress, Hayakawa said.

Ed Howard, supervising narcotics officer, said the four latest arrests brought the total number of arrests to 10 for last week's shakedown. Howard said the 10 arrests were for possessing prison contraband, promoting drugs and possessing drug paraphernalia.

The drug stashes found in the shakedown were worth between from $300 to more than $1000 in prison, about double what the drug is worth on the streets, Howard said.

The 10 inmates have been released back to prison authorities, pending further investigation. Those cases are also pending administrative investigation, a separate process that involves prison authorities.

Hayakawa said said no other arrests are expected.

"I think it's a positive thing," Hayakawa said about the shakedowns. "We know something had to be done to stop the drugs."

Clayton Frank, warden of OCCC, said it was a pleasant surprise that so few drugs were found. He said both number of weapons and amount of drugs found were much less than the last shakedown in October.
