Trees planted to fill gap

The state Department of Transportation recently planted six shower trees in the median of Kalaniana'ole Highway near Kalani High School at the request of the community.

There was a gap in shower trees that were planted in the late 1950s when the highway was built. The new trees were planted in June, after the community asked at a meeting on the present highway roadwork in April, said Rep. Barbara Marumoto, R-17th (Kahala, Wai'alae Iki).

The state Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting Thursday to discuss improvements to Kane'ohe Bay Drive.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Castle High School.

The improvements will consist of widening Kane'ohe Bay Drive from Puonala Street to Kawa Bridge by adding a through lane in the Kailua-bound direction and a left-turn lane in the Honolulu-bound direction.

Other proposed improvements include a wider shoulder to accommodate bicycle traffic; drainage structures; driveways; noise barriers and retaining walls; sidewalks and curb ramps that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards; and moving utility lines.
