Northern Ireland team leads in Billfish

Team Odyssey of Northern Ireland caught three Pacific blue marlin and amassed 900 points yesterday to take the early lead in the 42nd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kona.

Pajaro Valley (Calif.) Gamefish Club scored 550 points on the first day of fishing and is second among the 25-team field. Foxy Lady Fishing Team of Hawai'i is third with 300 points.

Fishing continues today starting at 8 a.m. The public is welcome to view the daily weigh-ins at the Kailua Pier starting at 4 p.m.

YOUTH BASEBALL

'Aiea loses opener: Jordan Daughenbaugh pitched a three-hitter and hit two home runs to power Lake Charles, La., to a 7-3 victory over 'Aiea in the Little League Junior (age 13) World Series yesterday at Taylor, Mich.

According to his coaches, Daughenbaugh's fastball has been clocked at 90 mph. He struck out 11, walked two and took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

'Aiea rallied for three runs, two scoring on Shawn Ha'o's double, but fell short in the opening game of pool play.

'Aiea, which has a bye today, plays U.S. East champion Rolando Paulino of the Bronx, N.Y., tomorrow.


YOUTH SOFTBALL

Pearls are perfect: The Pearl City Pearls defeated Wisconsin Rapid, 10-0, yesterday at the Babe Ruth World Series (ages 16-under) in Abbeville, La.

Erin Sing Chow was the winning pitcher.

The Pearls improved to 3-0 in the tournament.


SURFING

Meet postponed: Competition in the Oxbow World Longboard Championship yesterday was postponed due to small surf at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Eight of the 32 remaining surfers are from Hawai'i: Kekoa Uemura, Chris Vandervoort, Bonga Perkins, Zane Aikau, Duane DeSoto, Dino Miranda, Lance Hookano and Rusty Keaulana.

The meet will resume today, surf permitting.


VOLLEYBALL

Iolani plays host: Twenty varsity girls high school teams from Hawai'i, California and Canada will compete in the Iolani Volleyball Invitational Tournament tomorrow through Saturday at Iolani School.

Pool play matches begin at 9:45 a.m. and continue through 9 p.m.

Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), ranked third in the nation, returns to defend its title. Also competing will be ninth-ranked Mater Dei (Calif.).

Admission is $4 for adults per day ($12 for a four-day pass) and $1 for students.

AWARDS

Aiwohi is July's best: Pitcher Kaimana Aiwohi was chosen July's Athlete of the Month on the Big Island for tossing a no-hitter in the state's Little League Seniors (ages 13-15) tournament on O'ahu.

Aiwohi walked one and struck out six in the 11-0 win over Makakilo.

A winner is selected each month in the islandwide program sponsored by Don's Grill. The deadline for nominations for August's top athlete is Sept. 3. Send nominations to Box 767, Hilo 96721 or 485 Hinano Street in Hilo.
