Museum offers seminar on missionary period

By Will Hoover

If a friend from elsewhere asked how the Hawaiian language was created, or from whence came the mu'umu'u — would you know what to say? Does it surprise you to know that in the 1850s Hawai'i was considered to be among the world's most literate nations?

The Mission Houses Museum's History Series is designed to address these kinds of questions for kama'aina and newcomers alike. The seminar, focusing on Hawai'i's missionary period from 1820 to 1863, includes lectures, field trips, activities and discussion groups.

Sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon each Monday and Wednesday from Sept. 17 through Oct. 24. The $75 cost includes museum membership. For information, call 531-0481.
