"American Outlaws": The life of outlaw Jesse James has been portrayed in more than 30 films, but Warner Bros. is shifting the story line to give it more of a comedic tone, in a Butch-Cassidy-and-the-Sundance-Kid sort of way. "Captain Corelli's Mandolin": Based on the novel "Corelli's Mandolin," the film is set on a Greek island early in World War II. The Italian army has gained control of the island, led by Capt. Corelli (Nicolas Cage). Then Corelli begins a passionate affair with Pelagia (PenÚlope Cruz), a local beauty engaged to a fisherman. "The Golden Bowl": In this adaptation of the Henry James novel, an American widower (Nick Nolte) and his daughter (Kate Beckinsale) live the high life in Europe, collecting art. Socialite Fanny Assingham (Anjelica Huston) befriends the pair and succeeds in marrying them off the daughter to a compromised Italian prince (Jeremy Northam) and the widower to his daughter's longtime friend (Uma Thurman). Father and daughter come to realize that their spouses know each other quite well, and the presentation of a certain golden bowl starts the unraveling of the truth. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch": The darkly comic tale of Hedwig Schmidt (John Cameron Mitchell), a German immigrant living in a trailer park in middle (of nowhere) America. Back in East Berlin, several days before the fall of the Wall, Hedwig was the victim of a botched sex-change operation which left her with an "angry inch" as a remnant of her previous life as Hansel. Hedwig, backed by the hard rock group the Angry Inch, relates her story in rock opera form and takes the audience along on a quest for her missing identity. "Rat Race": Updated version of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963); a billionaire Las Vegas casino owner sets up a gambling scheme in which bettors wage on which of six candidates can find $2 million hidden somewhere.
