Fishing issues on the agenda

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will begin monthly talks on fisheries issues starting at noon today.

Jim Parish will discuss the effect of ta'ape or blue-lined snapper on other deepwater snappers in an hour-long talk at the department offices at 1151 Punchbowl Street, Room 132.

Studies show little direct interaction or competition for food between the adult fishes, but they do not address the potential for conflict with juveniles or competition between ta'ape and native species in shallower waters.

In subsequent talks, Kim Holland will discuss reef fish tracking studies Sept. 20; and Bill Walsh and Leon Hallecker will review whether West Hawai'i Fisheries Management Areas have affected aquarium fish populations Oct. 18. Jennifer Smith will talk about the spread of alien marine algae Nov. 15.

For more information about the lecture series, call the state Division of Aquatic Resources at 587-0100 .

New courts set for 'Aina Haina

'Aina Haina Community Park on West Hind Drive is about nine months away from getting new basketball, volleyball and tennis courts.

The city is seeking bids for the estimated $730,000 project that includes realigning the tennis courts from east-west to north-south, a walkway from the parking lot to the courts and new court surfaces and walls on the volleyball and basketball courts. Once a contractor is selected, the work could take six months to complete. During that time the courts will be closed.

The city is moving the tennis courts because of neighbor complaints of errant tennis balls hitting their roofs.

Kahala park seeks workers

The Hunakai Park Association is looking for volunteers and donations to help install a sprinkler system and barriers around the perimeter of the park at 713 Ulumaika St. in Kahala.

The 4-acre park is owned by the association and maintained by residents, said Susan Spangler, one of the park overseers.

Conditions set for Ka Iwi plan

The Waimanalo Neighborhood Board has voted to support the state's compromise plan for Ka Iwi Park, but only if certain conditions were met.

"We support the infrastructure, putting the wires underground and making it safer, but we will not support any concrete or asphalt paving," said Andrew Jamila Jr., who introduced a motion on the issue.

The motion, which passed 9-1 at a meeting Monday, includes the following conditions: restrict the parking area to no more than 20 cars and no buses and keep it out of sight; improve the road shoulder; enclose the current parking lot with a stone wall; eliminate any plan for a visitor center; install a solar-energy emergency telephone; do not use false landscaping; and do use native plants in landscaping.

Wilson Ho, chairman of the Waimanalo board, said the board was disappointed that the state didn't address the deteriorating condition of the road above Makapu'u Beach.

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board also supported the plan but opposed the use of concrete. The Ka Iwi Action Council also supports the latest plan.
