Things look a little different at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden when the full moon is out. See for yourself at the final Summer Garden Nightwalk, 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 1. It's free, but call 233-7323 to reserve a spot. The garden is at 45-680 Luluku Road, Kane'ohe. Bring a flashlight, walking shoes, insect repellent.

CD RELEASE PARTY: Aug. 24

All Star Band launches its compact disc, titled "Young Generation," with a cruising party aboard the Ali'i Kai catamaran. Boarding begins at 8:30 p.m. for the 9 p.m.-midnight sail Aug. 24. Members of All Star Band, which include individual performers and bands, are Quino, Three Plus, Sudden Rush, Kapena, Ilona Irvine, Norm, Jon Yamasato, Justin, Jevan Pasley and Kaonohi. Proceeds of the CD and the party will go to the March of Dimes. $15 general, $12 advance. Reservations: 973-2151.

FOODIE FEST: Aug. 25

The 10th anniversary of the founding of the Hawaii Regional Cuisine chefs' group will be celebrated with two events Aug. 25:

  • The Farmers Market Festival, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, will showcase fresh produce, seafood, coffee and offer cooking demonstrations by the Hawaii Regional Cuisine Chefs and entertainment. It's free; discounted parking will be available at the shopping center's garage. 922-2299.
  • The Hawaii Regional Cuisine Gala Dinner, 6-10 p.m. at the Sheraton Waikiki, is a grazing event with 25 interactive food stations featuring the creations of the 12 founding chefs and 13 Hawaiian Island Chefs. $125 ($25 discount if charging with American Express), corporate tables also available; proceeds will benefit the Hale 'Aina 'Ohana, which supports culinary programs in Hawai'i's community colleges. 931-3155.

CONCERT: Aug 25

KIPO Blues Night celebrates its one-year anniversary with a marathon of music at Anna Bannana's, 2440 S. King St. Four bands will be featured: The Eric Petersen Band at 4 p.m.; Bluzilla at 6 p.m.; Third Degree at 8 p.m.; and Bob Jones & Hard Drive, with special guest Keahi Conjugacion, at 10 p.m. A blues jam will take place at midnight. The earlier you get there, the better: Admission is $7 general, $5 for Hawai'i Public Radio members before 6 p.m.; afterward it's $10 general, $8 for HPR members. 955-8821.

FESTIVAL: Aug. 25-26

The 21st annual Greek Festival, a fund-raiser for Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, offers Mediterranean cuisine, entertainment, jewelry and clothing at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park. The seventh annual Frank B. CONCERT: Aug. 31

The Boogie Blues Dance Party will feature Canned Heat, the legendary San Francisco band, at the South Seas Village Theater Restaurant (Hawaiian Hut). The band, whose motto is "Don't Forget to Boogie!" has been going strong for 30 years, weathering the changing musical trends and the deaths of some founding members. COMEDY: Sept. 2

"An Evening With D.L. Hughley," featuring Darryl "D.L." Hughley, of the TV series "The Hughleys," will also feature actor-comedian Pat Morita at the Hawai'i Theatre. Hughley tours extensively and was part of the "Kings of Comedy Tour" with Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac, one of the top-grossing comedy tours ever, on which Spike Lee based his feature film "The Original Kings of Comedy." Morita, who has had a recurring role on the Hughley series, is perhaps best known for his Mr. Miyagi role in "The Karate Kid" film series. He most recently had a recurring role in the Island-based "Baywatch Hawai'i" show and provided the voice of the Emperor in "Mulan." 8 p.m. Sept. 2. $36.50 and $46.50, on sale at the box office. 528-0506.

Mark your calendars for a concert by Wayne "Mr. Las Vegas" Newton, at the Hawai'i Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The show-biz veteran headlines a show at the Stardust Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. 8 p.m. Sept. 7; doors open at 7 p.m. $45, $65 and $85 advance (tickets at the door will be $10 more), including one drink; premium Rose Circle seating in prime up-front middle tables also available (the rose refers to an icon in Newton's logo); on sale at the Sheraton special events desk and by telephone: 922-4422.

BED RACE: Sept. 15

The annual fund-raising Honolulu International Bed Race Festival gets under way with the main event cruising down Kalakaua Avenue. In addition to the bed race of 50 teams, activities at Kapi'olani Park include a keiki carnival of rides, games and ponies, a food festival, entertainment and a health and fitness tent. Among the beneficiaries of the festival are Adult Friends for Youth, Men of War Youth Ministries, Life 4 Kidz Team and the Honolulu Zoological Society. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 15; the bed race begins at 2 p.m. Free for spectators. 239-5546.

The Bobby Watson Quintet, featuring the internationally acclaimed saxophonist, will perform on two Islands:

  • Sept. 22 — 6 p.m., Kapono's at Aloha Tower Marketplace in Honolulu. $35, $40; $45 (reserved), at Ticket Plus outlets. 526-4400.

Watson has emerged as one of the top alto saxophonists in jazz, an innovator who often tops critics' and listeners' polls. Both shows will feature opening acts; the Maui guest has yet to be named but at Kapono's, guest artists will include Ginai, Henry Kapono and emcee Kale Imua.
