The Left Lane
'Waikiki' on the tube

Edgy Lee's documentary, "Waikiki in the Wake of Dreams," will receive its television premiere from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 24 on KHON-2. A rebroadcast is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14 on the Fox affiliate.

The film just won the 2001 Gold Plaque (documentary film, educational film category) in the Chicago International Film Festival, Lee said. The festival is a worldwide competition among film and video releases.

The film travels next to Southern California, premiering at the Santa Ana Center for Performing Arts, in conjunction with a concert by Keola Beamer, Lee said. The screening date there is Oct. 12.

Wanna be the face on the Wheaties box?

Move over, Cap'n Crunch. Step aside, Tony Tiger. The next celebrity appearing on a cereal box could be (your name here!).

General Mills wants to put the best face on its new product, Wheaties Energy Crunch, "The Breakfast of Everyday Champions." For years, the company has featured famous athletes on its Wheaties boxes. Now it is conducting a nationwide search for everyday heroes. It will select 50 state heroes, from which a person will be chosen in November to appear on cereal boxes next year.

You can nominate yourself, or anyone else you know who has excelled athletically, maintained a balanced life and been an outstanding community-service volunteer. Just write an original 300-word essay saying so, and send it to: Wheaties Energy Crunch Search for Everyday Champions, P.O. Box 2226, New York, NY 10116. But do it before the deadline of Sept. 14.

Why orange lipstick is completely uncool

Professional tooth-whitening isn't the only way to get a glowing smile. According to Jeffrey Shapiro, a cosmetic dentist in New York, your lipstick can affect how your teeth look.

Beware of orange-toned lipsticks, such as coral and warm pinks. They make teeth look yellow. Frosted lipsticks, unless they are extremely luminous, make teeth appear dull.

Shades such as glossy reds make teeth look whiter and brighter. Deep, dark shades also accentuate the brightness of your teeth.

Advertiser winner lucky in Vegas, too

Honolulu resident Carol Horita is the grand prize winner in The Advertiser's Lucky 13 Contest, earning her the opportunity to disappear at David Copperfield's show tomorrow night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

"I'm in shock," said Horita, who was informed of her victory while vacationing this week in Las Vegas. "I've had a real run of luck lately. Everything I touch turns to gold." Translation: She's a Vegas winner, too.

Copperfield will take Horita on a "trip" during his new show, "Portal," which opens a week's run tomorrow night. While on stage, he will make her vanish. A dozen others will receive two tickets to the performance, an autographed program and dinner for two at Compadres Bar & Grill.
