Alliance Awards honor conductor

The Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education's Alliance Awards — a celebration of the arts and achievement in arts education — will honor Henry Miyamura, longtime music director and conductor of the Hawai'i Youth Symphony Association and Orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Hawai'i Theatre.

Miyamura will be presented the Alfred Preis Award for lifetime dedication to music. Miyamura is a professor of music at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, where he also conducts both the University of Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra and the UH Chamber Orchestra.

Previously, he was band director at McKinley High School, principal clarinetist with the Honolulu Symphony and assistant conductor of the Honolulu Symphony.

The award is named after the founder of both the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education. Irmgard Aluli, last year's winner, will present it.

The Brothers Cazimero will perform, along with the HYSO and the Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus.

Tickets: $35 for adults, $15 for alliance members, with discounts available for students and seniors; on sale starting Aug. 28 at the Hawai'i Theatre box office. Information: 528-0506.
