Kayaker's body found off Kualoa

Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews recovered the body of a 44-year-old kayaker in water off Kualoa Beach yesterday.

The man's family reported him missing in the afternoon, and crews from the Ka'a'awa and Ho-nolulu stations searched the ocean for about 30 minutes.

A rescue boat found the man between the reef and shoreline at 49-709 Kamehameha Highway.

Rescuers brought him to shore where his family was waiting, but he could not be resuscitated.

Autopsy says arrow hit father in heart

The 44-year-old Kona hunter killed by a ricocheting arrow died from a wound to his heart, an autopsy performed Thursday has determined.

Thomas Depontes was struck by the arrow Sunday while bow hunting with his two sons in the Pu'uwa'awa'a Ranch area of South Kohala.

Kona police determined that Depontes was shot accidentally by his 18-year-old son, Thomas. They say Thomas Depontes spotted a sheep about 15 yards away, but because of rocks and brush, didn't see his father standing about 20 yards beyond the sheep. The son shot an arrow that missed the sheep, bounced off a rock or branch, and struck his father in the chest.

According to witnesses, the elder Depontes pulled the arrow out, walked a few steps and then collapsed.

Death after fight ruled a crime

Big Island police have classified the death of a 47-year-old Waimea man as manslaughter after an autopsy determined he died from head injuries suffered in a fight.

Harold Estes died at the North Hawaii Community Hospital on July 9, the day after he got into a fistfight with another man, also 47, who had tried to break up a domestic dispute in which Estes was involved.

While police were investigating the fight, Estes began to have trouble breathing. He was taken to the hospital, where he slipped into a coma. He died the following evening.
