Texas stops Pearl City in Ruth softball

Kassi Mikulik hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Tri-Country, Texas, to the Babe Ruth Softball World Series title with a 3-1 victory over the Pearl City Pearls at Abbeville, La., yesterday.

Tri-County won its second consecutive championship for girls 16-and-under.

Miki Asamura and Natalie Fujimoto each had two hits for the Pearls.

Pearl City's Leo Sing Chow, Tricia Arneson, Charity Senas and Asamura were named to the All-World Series team. Fujimoto and Lindsay Fujita were named to the all-defensive Team. Senas was the tournament's batting champion with a .400 average.


BASEBALL

• Babe Ruth World Series: Kaimi Mead went 2-for-2, scored two runs and earned a pitching victory as Hawai'i routed Iowa City, Iowa, 20-0, in its opening game at the tournament for 13- to 15-year-olds at Hamilton, N.J.

Mead allowed three hits and struck out seven for the team from Honolulu. Kasey Ko also had two hits with four runs scored and three RBIs, including a home run.

• Cal Ripken World Series: O'ahu's Leonard Aldosa hit a three-run homer in a four-run sixth inning, but the rally fell short as South Lexington, Ky., won 5-4, in the first round of the tournament for 12-year-olds at Vincennes, Ind.

• American Legion Western Regionals: Daniel Burgess and Kamaile Santos each had three hits as Windward defeated Utah 17-11 at Salt Lake City. Windward finished the tournament 1-2.
