Bown helps U.S. stop Cuba in volleyball

Logan Tom had 14 kills and Heather Bown added six kills and six blocks as the United States women's national volleyball team defeated Olympic champion Cuba at the 2001 World Grand Prix at Harbin, China.

The scores were 25-18, 27-25, 24-26, 25-18.

Bown is one of three former University of Hawai'i players on the U.S. team. Robyn AhMow is the U.S. captain and starting setter and Therese Crawford recently joined the team and played against Cuba.

Tom is a Stanford University junior from Salt Lake City.

The United States is 5-3 and closes preliminary play today against Germany (1-7) and a chance to wrapup second place enterting the final round playoffs next week.

Cuba (4-4), which had 20 service errors and 19 attacking errors against the United States, closes the preliminary round against China (7-1).


BASKETBALL

• Gaspro wins: The NCAA Summer League wrapped up its season yesterday as Gaspro defeated Honolulu Ford 102-95 to claim the championship at Kaimuki Gym.

Gaspro's Nick Spajic of Hawai'i Pacific led all scorers with 30 points. HPU teammate Nash Subotic added 23.

Honolulu Ford's Mike McIntyre, who plays for the University of Hawai'i, scored 28 and Iolani's Bobby Nash had 25.


WATER POLO

• Hawaiian Invitational winners: Hawai'i Islands A, defeated Commerce B of Los Angeles 8-6 to win the girls 16-under championship at the 33rd Annual Hawaiian Invitational yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

In another finals, East, from New England, defeated Hawai'i Islands A, 7-4, in the boys 16-under tournament title game.

Coronado of California defeated Hawai'i Islands A, 5-4, in the 18-under division after a seven-minute overtime and a shootout (9-8) in the girls 18-under division.

Lamorinda defeated San Miguel 6-5 in for the boys 18-under championship. Both teams are from California.


PADDLING

• Iron Challenge: The Kailua Canoe Club will hold its seventh annual Kailua Bay Men's Iron Challenge on Saturday at Kailua Beach Park.

Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. The race is approximately 9.5 miles, and will be a LeMan's style, meaning crew members will be on the beach and have to run to their canoes and begin paddling.

The race will be dedicated to the late Bob Cates, former head coach of both Lanikai and Kailua Canoe Clubs.

Post-competition celebration includes performances by the Waimanalo Sunset Band and the Ka'au Crater Boys.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Wallace to speak: University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Riley Wallace, swimmer John Flanagan and paddler Donna Kahakui will be the featured speakers at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Wallace will talk about his players for the upcoming season.

Flanagan will discuss competing in the recently competed World Championships.

Kahakui, of the Outrigger Canoe Club, will talk about promoting the sport of paddling.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program set for noon.

The public is invited and lunch is $7.
