Fisherman drowns off Big Island
A Big Island fisherman apparently drowned yesterday afternoon in waters off King's Landing in Hilo.
Police and fire rescue crews responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at about 1:20 p.m. The man was pulled out of the water by a fire rescue helicopter about 20 minutes later.
The man was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. His name was not released.
Police said the man was fishing alone on the shoreline and may have fallen into the ocean. An autopsy will be performed.
Motorcyclist killed in crash identified
LAHAINA, Maui Police identified the motorcyclist killed in a collision Sunday as David Oishi, 20, of Kahului.
Oishi's 1999 Suzuki motorcycle was northbound on Honoapi'ilani Highway at about 4:10 p.m. when he ran a red light at the Kupunakea Street intersection and broadsided a 1988 Nissan pickup, said Lt. Charles Hirata of the Maui Police.
The 55-year-old man driving the truck was not injured.
There have been 15 traffic fatalities in Maui County this year, compared with 14 at this time a year ago.
Maui Road project hearing planned
LAHAINA, Maui The Maui County Department of Public Works and Waste Management will hold a public hearing from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 29 to discuss the draft environmental assessment for the Lower Honoapi'ilani Road Phase IV project.
The meeting will be at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria, 871 Lahainaluna Road.
The project involves proposed improvements from Ho'ohui Road to Napilihau Street.

Car seat safety inspection offered
WAILUKU, Maui Maui police and the Safe Communities group will conduct a free child car seat safety inspection from 5:30 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Cameron Center.
Parents and caregivers can learn how to properly install the car seats, which are required by Hawai'i law for children under age 4.
At an inspection done Saturday, only one of 16 car seats was properly secured, said Lt. Charles Hirata of the Maui Police Department's Traffic Section.
