VOLLEYBALL

Wong to carry flag: Scott Wong of Pearl City, a member of the USA Volleyball National Team, has been elected to carry the United States flag during the opening ceremonies of the World University Games at Beijing.

The opening ceremonies of the 21st Universiade are tomorrow at Beijing Workers Stadium.

Wong, a 1997 Punahou graduate, recently earned a bachelor's degree in business at Pepperdine University, where he was a four-time All-American and a two-year member of the student athletic advisory council.

BASEBALL

Nakama named assistant at Stanford: David Nakama, who coached the Hawai'i Island Movers the past two summers, was hired as an assistant baseball coach at Stanford University, the Pac-10 school announced yesterday.

Nakama, head coach at NCAA Division II San Francisco State the past three seasons, returns to Stanford, where he was an assistant in 1997 and 1998. He will be the first base coach and work with the team's hitters and infielders.

Nakama, a 1980 Kaiser High graduate, was an applicant for the University of Hawai'i job, which eventually went to Georgia Tech assistant Mike Trapasso.

Nakama also held coaching jobs at several junior colleges, and at Iowa and Northern Colorado.

West O'ahu loses: West O'ahu remained winless at the Cal Ripken World Series (ages 11-12) after dropping its second one-run game yesterday.

Edison, N.J., broke a 1-all tie with a five-run third inning en route to an 8-7 victory over West O'ahu yesterday at Vincennes, Ind.

On Saturday, O'ahu lost its opener, 5-4, to South Lexington, Ky.

Yesterday, O'ahu scored four runs in the top of the fourth to close to 6-5, but Edison scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-5 lead. O'ahu scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Cal Ripken spent the day with the players and coaches of the 15-team international tournament on his day off from the Orioles.
