O'ahu team 3-0 in Ruth World Series

Kaimi Mead pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 as O'ahu defeated Cambridge, Mass., 5-3, yesterday in the Babe Ruth World Series (ages 13-15) at Hamilton Township, N.J.

Mark Veneri batted 2-for-4 for O'ahu, which had 10 hits and no errors.

Justin Ariki, Michael Lam, Mel Silva and Kelly Teramoto had RBIs.

O'ahu, which improved to 3-0 in pool play, meets Tallahassee, Fla. (2-1) today.


MORE YOUTH BASEBALL

• West O'ahu falls: New Orleans Lakeshore rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat West O'ahu, 4-3, yesterday in the Cal Ripken World Series (ages 11-12) at Vincennes, Ind.

West O'ahu lost its third consecutive one-run decision in round-robin play despite outhitting New Orleans 8-5 and stranding two runners in the sixth and final inning.

Kippi Aldosa batted 2-for-3, and Traci Yoshikawa and Alika Borabora each had a hit and scored a run for West O'ahu.

West O'ahu plays Eugene, Ore., today.


WALKING

• Lighting the way: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Hawai'i is sponsoring a "Light the Night" walk at the Ala Moana Beach Park tonight starting at 6:30.

The 2-mile walk starts at McCoy Pavillion and continues around the park.

All funds raised will go directly to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkins disease, and also to improving the quality of life of patients and their families, according to the society.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

• Two at Colorado: Junior Sam Taulealea of 'Aiea is No. 1 on the depth chart at defensive tackle as University of Colorado starts fall camp.

Taulealea, listed at 6 feet and 320 pounds in the school's football guide, played in 10 games as a backup last season, averaging just under 18 plays per game.

Taulealea, a 1998 graduate, is one of two St. Louis School alumni on the Buffs' roster. Freshman Lafaele "Vaka" Manupuna of Kane'ohe is the other.

Manupuna, 6 feet 1 and 270 pounds, was a member of the Advertiser's Super 25 all-state team last season and was on the SuperPrep recruiting magazine's All-Far West team, ranked as the 72nd best player overall in the region.


GOLF

• Sanchez leads: Golf Action Academy's Frank Sanchez shot a 71 at Ko Olina Golf Club yesterday to take the first-round lead of the Aloha Section PGA's Assistant Professional Championship.

Scott Kaneko (Waikele Golf Club) and Kevin Carll (Hapuna Golf Course) are one stroke back.

The second and final round will be played today, starting at 7 a.m.

The winner of this tournament will represent the Aloha Section at the national championship, Oct. 25-28, at the PGA Golf Club South Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
