In a wide-ranging on-line chat with Advertiser readers, University of Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang yesterday announced his personal goals, admitted he would not have signed with the Warriors if June Jones were not the head coach and answered the burning question, "Which first name do you prefer?"

Chang, who took a break from moving into his new apartment to participate in the chat, spoke of his team's goal of winning a Western Athletic Conference championship.

Personally, he said, "I want to throw for 4,000 yards, throw for 30 touchdowns, throw fewer than seven interceptions."

When asked if he would have signed with UH if Jones were not the head coach, Chang said, "Coach Jones brings the run-and-shoot (offense), and that comes from (Jones' mentor) Mouse Davis. If the run-and-shoot was somewhere else, I would probably have to find the run-and-shoot. I guess the answer would be 'no.' "

Another reader asked, "Can you talk about the pressures you feel with this being 'your' team?"

Chang responded, "Wow, that's a bold question." After pausing, Chang continued, "It is my (team), actually. It is my team because I'm in the key position. It's just the responsibility that one must accept being in this position (of quarterback)."

Of the newcomers, Chang praised running back Mike Bass, saying that during Tuesday's morning practice, "he did very well. He had a couple of moves that threw defenders way off."

Chang credited his weight gain to sufficient amount of sleep, a diet of four to five meals each day, and nutritional supplements. The 6-foot-2 Chang weighed 190 at the end of last season; he now weighs 205.

As for whether to call him "Tim," "Timmy" or "Babe," he said, "If you were my girlfriend, you can call me, 'Babe.' Other than that, whatever tickles your pickle."
